Central Asian Shepherd - one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Already more than one thousand years, these types of dogs live next to people by protecting their greatest asset - the sheep from the carnivores (wolfs jackals and even bears).
Central Asia is a huge area - steppe, mountains, plains, and so today we can still see the different types of Asian Shepherd Dogs, raging from large and massive, with their skin hanging more like Mastiff, to stronger physique dogs, similar to Turkish or Greek shepherd. Central Asian Shepherd Dog is one of the few dog breeds that the man had no decisive influence to their development. You could say that the nature itself formed this breed. Clearly, man had at least some influence in it. Eg. Only the strongest males, who were the best at protecting the herds and fighting predators off, were allowed to breed. Thus, Central Asian Shepherds were formed exclusively as a working breed, and the exterior was only relevant in so far as influenced by a better adaptation to natural conditions, the ability to self-sustain (shepherds almost never fed dogs) and, of course, to do their job. Such harsh living condition has evolved the Central Asian shepherd appearance - rough habit, dense undercoat of fur, tall and, of course, self sustainable.
Given the fact that Central Asia is immense territory, these dogs had different names-alabay, daxmarda, Tibetan.
Many experts consider the name "Shepherd" in principle does not describe alabay. Shepherd means the Shepherd's sheep dog, but alabay had different duty- to protect and defend the sheep from predators, there were other type dogs used for sheep grazing, skinnier, and faster such as “Border Collie”. So it would be more accurate to call alabay “wolfhound” or just dogs of shepherds, which would be more in line with their intended use.
Our way of life and conditions, of course, not similar to the Central Asian shepherds, but to us these wonderful dogs have found their fans thanks to their excellent ability to adapt to different climate conditions, impressive appearance and excellent character.
Alabay is an excellent guard of his territory, although, he does not attack strangers without warning. These types of dogs behave calmly around people they know, although, they don’t like familiarity much, but they are very loyal and dedicated to their owners. It is true that most alabay have rather aggressive attitude of their tribesmen, but within their tribe they conduct themselves in accordance with their place in the hierarchy.
A special effort in raising and training these dogs is not required. Simple communication, regular outdoor walks (all alabay like long walks) are enough for these dogs. Always encourage good behavior and clearly show what behavior is not acceptable. In no way physical force should be used with these dogs – alabay is very proud dog, loss of their trust will be very hard to regain.

Good luck to all interested in this amazing dog breed; breeders, enthusiasts and all dog lovers, so long and we’ll see you at the dog shows!
